reflection on shakespeare’s sonnet 146

O   my poor soul

the eternal has never seemed in need

of time   & so   outward things steal

my inward eye

making a name   for an image

an image for a name   a house to hold

what houses seem to claim

We were talking   about the space

between us all   & how extravagantly

I paint exterior walls   though I know

within   lies my soul's shortfall

O   my soul   I pour

my strengths   where they

will often spill   & spend

what I can little afford

on what comes to an end

Within be fed   without be rich no more
